Senegal defender Moussa Niakhaté convinced Teranga Lions can achieve great things under Patrick Vieira

Senegal defender Moussa Niakhaté believes the Lions of Teranga can achieve great things under new head coach Patrick Vieira, as they prepare to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Mozambique.

The Teranga Lions will face Mozambique in Maputo on Friday, September 25, in their opening Group [X] fixture, with Vieira set to take charge of his first competitive match since being appointed head coach.

Niakhaté says the squad has already embraced the new coaching staff and is excited about the direction the team is taking under the former France international.

“For us, nothing changes, whether it’s the first match or the fifth. Nothing changes. There’s excitement, we’re very happy and we’re ready to take on the tough challenge that awaits us tomorrow,” Niakhaté said.

The defender believes the transition has been smooth, with Vieira and his staff quickly establishing a strong connection with the players.

“We’re adapting, and it’s very easy to work with this coaching staff, who speak the same football language as us. I’m convinced we’ll achieve great things together,” he added.

Niakhaté also pointed to the renewed enthusiasm within the squad following the arrival of the new technical team, insisting that the changes have brought fresh energy to the national side.

“There have been a lot of changes, but what we’re seeing today is the enthusiasm and excitement brought by the new coaching staff, who are breathing new life into the team,” he said.

With Vieira now preparing for his first match in charge, Senegal will be aiming to make a strong start to their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign when they take on Mozambique in Maputo.
