Jesse Bisiwu keeps door open to Ghana switch despite Belgium U21 involvement

Barcelona winger Jesse Bisiwu has refused to close the door on representing Ghana at senior international level despite continuing to feature for Belgium’s youth teams.

The 18-year-old is currently with Belgium’s Under-21 side during the international break but remains eligible to play for Ghana because of his family heritage.

Bisiwu has represented Belgium from the youth levels and was part of the country’s squad at the 2025 European Under-17 Championship, where he helped the team reach the semi-finals and earned a place in the tournament’s best XI.

His international future, however, remains undecided, with Ghana reportedly making efforts to convince the Barcelona youngster to switch allegiance to the Black Stars.

Asked about the possibility of representing Ghana in the future, Bisiwu did not rule out the option.

“In the future you never know, but right now the focus is on the u21s and winning games.”

Ghana connection keeps international race open

Bisiwu was born in Leuven, Belgium, but has Ghanaian family roots and has acknowledged his connection to the West African country.

He has also visited Ghana regularly and confirmed that both football associations have been in contact with him regarding his international future.

The youngster has not yet made a definitive decision on which country he wants to represent at senior level, leaving the possibility of a future switch open.

His current priority, however, remains Belgium’s Under-21 team as he continues his development on the international stage.

Bisiwu’s situation has attracted attention in Ghana because of his move to Barcelona, where he signed a contract running until June 2031 after joining from Club Brugge.

Barcelona move adds to Ghana interest

The winger’s emergence at Barcelona has increased interest in his international future, particularly as Ghana continues to monitor players with eligibility to represent the Black Stars.

Bisiwu has already experienced football at a high level for his age. He made 36 appearances for Club NXT in the Belgian second division before completing his move to Barcelona this summer.

For now, the teenager is concentrating on Belgium’s Under-21 campaign and has avoided committing himself beyond that level.

His comments leave the door open for Ghana, but any potential switch will depend on his future decision and senior international career.
