Real Madrid tensions rise as Florentino Perez and Jose Mourinho reportedly clash

Tension is growing at Real Madrid after a poor run of form, with reports claiming the club has already experienced its first disagreement between president Florentino Perez and manager Jose Mourinho.

The concerns have intensified following two defeats in the team’s past four La Liga matches. Real Madrid are now six points behind leaders Barcelona, adding to the unease around the Santiago Bernabeu.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the dispute between Perez and Mourinho is the latest sign of wider uncertainty at the club. The report says the main concern centres on Perez himself, barely two and a half months after he was elected president for another four-year term.

Questions are already being raised over whether Perez will complete his mandate, which is due to end in 2030. Signs of fatigue are said to be increasingly visible, while some of his recent decisions are viewed as out of character compared with the past, when his authority over the club’s decision-making was considered virtually untouchable.

There is also a belief in some quarters that Real Madrid currently lacks a clear leader at the top of its structure. The combination of the team’s results, the reported tension with Mourinho and doubts surrounding Perez has created an atmosphere of uncertainty within the club.

Mundo Deportivo says Real Madrid therefore recognise the need to begin identifying a suitable successor to Perez. That person would need to take control of the club, meet all the requirements for the presidency set out in its statutes and have the approval of the current president.

Without that agreement, there are fears of a “coup” in the next election. Such a scenario could lead to the election of Enrique Riquelme, Perez’s last rival in the previous contest.

Those concerns are conditional on Perez completing his current term, but they have nevertheless contributed to growing uncertainty over Real Madrid’s leadership and future direction.
