Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi reassures fans after reported concussion

Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi appeared to be in good condition after his side’s 1-0 victory over Kuwait in the opening match of the Arabian Gulf Cup “Gulf 27”.

Al-Aqidi had sparked concern when he was carried from the field on a stretcher during Wednesday’s game at Al-Enma Stadium, with reports claiming he had suffered a concussion.

The goalkeeper was injured in the 76th minute after an aerial challenge with a Kuwait player. He was replaced by team-mate Mohammed Al-Owais as Saudi Arabia held on for victory.

However, Al-Aqidi later appeared in the area designated for media interviews and was able to leave the stadium on foot without assistance.

A video posted by Alaa Saeed on 23 September 2026 showed Al-Aqidi leaving the venue. Its caption read: “Nawaf Al-Aqidi as he leaves the Jawhara… thank God, he is safe and well.”

The Al-Nassr goalkeeper was wearing a splint on his hand, supporting comments from Saudi Arabia manager Georgios Donis that the injury was to Al-Aqidi’s hand rather than his head.

Despite the reassuring appearance, it remains unclear whether Al-Aqidi will be available for Saudi Arabia’s second group match against Oman on Saturday.

Saudi Arabia’s victory moved them to the top of Group A after the opening round of matches. They secured three points through a 1-0 win over Kuwait, while Iraq and Oman drew 1-1 earlier on Wednesday.

The hosts were unable to add to their lead after Al-Aqidi’s departure but completed the match with a clean sheet. The circumstances surrounding the goalkeeper’s injury had nevertheless become the main concern after the final whistle, following the reports of a possible concussion.

Al-Aqidi’s condition will therefore be monitored ahead of the meeting with Oman, with Saudi Arabia now leading the group after the first round of fixtures.
