Amina Orfi and Mostafa Asal honoured after Qatar Classic triumphs

Youth and Sports Minister Joher Nabil has honoured squash players Amina Orfi and Mostafa Asal at the ministry’s headquarters following their victories at the Qatar Classic.

The Qatar Classic is one of the major tournaments on the squash season calendar, with both Egyptian players claiming titles in Doha.

Orfi reached the top of the women’s world rankings for the first time in her career after a remarkable run of success in recent months.

The 19-year-old won the World Championship in May before adding the British Open title. She then began the current season by securing victory at the London Classic and Qatar Classic.

Orfi is now the fifth Egyptian woman to become world number one, following Raneem El Welily, Nour El Sherbini, Nouran Gohar and Hania El Hammamy.

El Welily was the first Egyptian player to lead the world rankings, achieving the feat in September 2015.

Orfi has also become the youngest player in squash history to reach number one. She surpassed the previous record held by New Zealand’s Susan Devoy, who topped the rankings in 1984.

Asal won the men’s Qatar Classic after defeating France’s Victor Crouin in the final. The Egyptian currently leads the men’s world rankings.

The Egypt Open squash tournament is scheduled to take place from 6 to 16 October.
