Lamine Yamal emerges as 2026 Ballon d’Or favourite

Lamine Yamal is increasingly being viewed as the leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, despite Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Rodri and Harry Kane also having strong claims.

The award winner will be announced in London on October 26, with the race regarded as one of the most unpredictable in recent years. Mbappe remains determined to claim the prize, but recent reports suggest the momentum is shifting towards Yamal.

The Barcelona winger did not enjoy a spectacular summer with Spain, despite being a regular starter during the team’s World Cup triumph in the United States. However, his outstanding 2025-26 campaign at club level and impressive beginning to the new season continue to strengthen his case.

French journalist Yassin Nfaoui, speaking on the Spanish programme El Chiringuito, described Yamal as “the big favourite” to win the award at present.

A victory would surprise some observers, particularly because several established stars are competing for the honour. Nevertheless, Yamal’s league success with Barcelona and his World Cup triumph with Spain have given voters compelling reasons to support him.

The 21-year-old could therefore upset the predictions and become the youngest major winner in a fiercely contested Ballon d’Or race.
