Franck Kessie highlights Ghana-Ivory Coast rivalry ahead of AFCON 2027 qualifier

Ivory Coast captain Franck Kessie says his side are expecting a difficult encounter when they face Ghana in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.

The Elephants will welcome the Black Stars to the Stade de la Paix in Bouake as the two West African rivals begin their Group C campaign with both teams targeting victory.

Kessie highlights Ghana rivalry

Kessie described Ghana as one of Africa’s major football nations and believes the quality on both sides will make Thursday’s encounter a demanding contest.

The Ivory Coast captain said his team have been working hard and following coach Herve Renard’s instructions as they prepare for the first whistle.

“When you play Ghana, it’s a derby. Ghana are also a great African nation with very good players. We’re working hard and following the coach’s instructions to be ready from the first whistle tomorrow,” Kessie told the press.

Black Stars begin AFCON qualifying campaign

Ghana have been in camp since Monday, beginning their preparations in Accra before travelling to Ivory Coast for the Group C opener.

The match is scheduled for a 19:00 kick-off on Thursday, 24 September, at the Peace Stadium in Bouake.

Both Ghana and Ivory Coast will be seeking a winning start as they begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The two teams are joined in Group C by The Gambia and Somalia, who will also be competing for qualification to next year’s tournament.
