AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Herve Renard calls Ghana clash a ‘big’ African football showdown

Ivory Coast coach Herve Renard says his side’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana will be a major test as both West African rivals begin their Group C campaign.

The Elephants will host the Black Stars at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake on Thursday, with both sides aiming to start their bid for qualification with victory.

“This is a big clash in African football. Ghana are a good team. The match will never be easy for anyone,” the Ivory Coast coach told the press.

Renard expects tough Ghana test

Renard acknowledged the quality of the Ghana side ahead of what promises to be a competitive encounter between two of Africa’s established football nations.

The Ivory Coast coach is preparing his team for a difficult contest, with the Black Stars looking to make a positive start under their current preparations for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Ghana began their preparations in Accra on Monday before travelling to Ivory Coast for Thursday’s Group C opener.

Ghana and Ivory Coast target winning starts

The match will kick off at 19:00 local time on Thursday, 24 September, at the Peace Stadium in Bouake.

Both teams will be looking to take an early advantage in a group that also includes The Gambia and Somalia.

With qualification points at stake from the opening game, Ghana and Ivory Coast will be aiming to begin their campaigns strongly as they seek a place at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
