Egypt Volleyball survive Ghana test to set up fifth-place play-off

Egypt’s men’s volleyball team fought back to beat Ghana 3-2 in the African Championship placement matches and remain in contention for fifth place.

The match was part of the competition for teams finishing between fifth and eighth, after Egypt’s quarter-final exit against Algeria. Egypt lost that match 3-2 in sets, ending their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

Against Ghana, Egypt eventually prevailed after a deciding set, winning it 15-9. The result means they will face Rwanda on Thursday in a match to determine fifth place in the tournament.

The campaign marks the first time since 1997 that Egypt have failed to reach the semi-finals of the African Championship.

Egypt entered the tournament as defending champions, having won the previous edition. They are also the second most successful team in the competition’s history, with nine titles.

Only Tunisia have won the African Championship more often, with 11 titles.

Sixteen teams are taking part in this year’s tournament. The champions will secure qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, while the top three teams will qualify for the 2027 World Championship.

Algeria will meet Cameroon in the semi-finals, while Tunisia face Morocco in the other last-four tie.
