Huijsen and Mourinho assistant suspended as Madrid derby sanctions announced

The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee has issued three decisions relating to the latest La Liga round, including one-match suspensions for Real Madrid defender Huijsen and assistant coach Pedro Machado following the tense Madrid derby.

Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano, in a match which featured several confrontations between players and members of both coaching teams.

Huijsen was sent off after conceding a penalty for a foul on Giuliano Simeone. The committee has now ruled that the defender must serve a one-match suspension, meaning he will miss Real Madrid’s La Liga fixture against Villarreal on 10 October.

Machado, who was part of Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff, was also dismissed during the derby. His one-match ban was imposed for “conduct contrary to good sporting order”.

The match was marked by significant tension, with several incidents involving the players and technical areas. Mourinho also criticised the officials and displayed images of disputed decisions during his post-match news conference.

The disciplinary committee also issued a warning to Real Madrid over the delayed start to the second half. According to the referee’s report, the match resumed five minutes late because the club were not ready to restart on time.

The committee’s decision stated: “Real Madrid are reminded of the obligation imposed on teams to comply fully with the official scheduled start time of matches in both halves. The club is requested to exercise the utmost care and take the necessary measures to ensure full compliance in its matches.”
