Yoane Wissa pays tribute to Congo after historic World Cup run

Yoane Wissa has paid tribute to the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo after the national team’s historic run at the 2026 World Cup, saying the players were backed by an entire country.

The Leopards forward was speaking on behalf of his team-mates at a ceremony held at the African Union City on Tuesday, where the players received national tributes and were officially decorated in recognition of their achievement.

The event was attended by President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, who joined the celebrations honouring the national team.

Wissa used the occasion to highlight the collective effort behind the team’s success and stressed that the players’ achievement could not be separated from the support they received from the country.

“ On the field we were 11, but behind us there was a group and an entire country. We must not forget all our defeats and disappointments. Our elders fought to improve every moment, and every centimeter became meters. On behalf of my teammates, I want to tell you how honored we are by this recognition ,” said Yoane Wissa with deep emotion.

His words reflected on a journey shaped not only by success but also by the setbacks experienced by previous generations of Congolese footballers.

The forward acknowledged the role played by those who came before the current squad, saying their efforts helped create the progress that eventually led the Leopards to the highest level of international football.
