Luis Diaz targets Champions League glory after ‘very happy’ Bayern Munich start

Luis Diaz says he wants to win the Champions League with Bayern Munich after a highly successful first season at the club.

The 29-year-old Colombia international joined Bayern Munich from Liverpool in 2025 for 75 million euros and quickly became an important part of their attack. He finished his debut campaign with 26 goals and 23 assists.

Bayern completed a domestic treble during Diaz’s first season, but their bid for European success ended in the semi-finals. They were beaten 6-5 on aggregate by Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite that disappointment, Diaz remains extremely pleased with his decision to move to Germany. He believes the welcome he received from his team-mates and the coaching staff helped him adapt quickly to life at the Bavarian club.

“For me, Bayern is special; it was something that came along and made me extremely happy at the time, and it continues to make me very happy,” said Diaz.

The forward said the way he was accepted into the squad made the transition considerably easier.

“When you arrive and they make you feel as if you’ve been a part of the group for a very long time – making you feel like family – I think it makes it quite a bit easier to adapt,” he said.

Diaz also highlighted the importance of the team’s collective performance in allowing individual players to flourish.

“When the collective works, the individual thrives too,” he added.

The Colombia international has praised manager Vincent Kompany’s tactical approach, with particular approval for the balance between attacking freedom and defensive responsibility.

Kompany allows his players to express themselves, Diaz said, while still making clear what is expected of them in their positions. The manager also places importance on Bayern defending as a unit and keeping their shape.

“He gives you the freedom to play, obviously while respecting your specific duties on the pitch,” said Diaz.

“He demands a bit more in that we all have to defend together, ensuring we maintain strong positioning to defend better.”

Although Bayern secured domestic success in Diaz’s first campaign, he insists the team cannot ease off. Their aim, he says, must be to challenge for every trophy available, including the Champions League.

“We have to go for everything – every single competition we are in, and push for the lot,” said Diaz.
