Kylian Mbappe reveals he was close to joining Liverpool in 2017

Kylian Mbappe has revealed he came close to joining Liverpool in 2017, before deciding to remain in France and move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The France international began his professional career with AS Monaco before joining Paris Saint-Germain. He now plays for Real Madrid.

Mbappe told The Athletic that Liverpool was a serious option before his move to the Paris club. His mother was a strong admirer of then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and wanted her son to join the Reds at Anfield.

“I was close to Liverpool,” Mbappe said. “My mother was a big fan of Jurgen Klopp and her favourite destination was Liverpool. She wanted me to go there.”

The forward ultimately chose not to follow his mother’s preference, opting instead to stay in France and play in his home city.

“I didn’t listen to her because I wanted to play in my city, Paris,” he added. “I didn’t want to leave my country before I had succeeded.”
