Morocco commits MAD 1.265bn to Marrakech stadium upgrade ahead of 2030 World Cup

Morocco has awarded a MAD 1.265 billion ($126.5m) contract to Moroccan company Lamalif to carry out the fourth phase of renovations at the Marrakech Grand Stadium as part of preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The project is expected to take 18 months and will focus on modernising the stadium’s technical infrastructure and installing systems required to host major international sporting events.

Morocco will co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal as preparations continue across the country’s major football venues.

Stadium to receive major electrical and digital upgrades

The latest phase of the Marrakech stadium project includes extensive improvements to its electrical infrastructure.

The works will cover electrical installations, specialised stadium lighting, generators and power transformers, with the upgrades designed to improve the venue’s technical capacity and ensure reliable operation during matches and other major events.

The stadium’s digital infrastructure will also be expanded, with different areas connected to information and telecommunications networks.

High-speed Wi-Fi will be installed to provide improved connectivity for supporters, staff, media and event organisers.

Security systems to be modernised

Security and crowd management are also central to the renovation programme.

Advanced video surveillance cameras and access-control systems will be installed as part of efforts to improve monitoring inside the stadium and manage spectator movement across different sections of the venue.

The upgrades are intended to bring the stadium’s security infrastructure in line with the standards required for major international competitions.

New screens and sound systems planned

The Marrakech Grand Stadium will also receive new audiovisual equipment, including LED screens and LED ribbons.

Dedicated sound systems will be installed to support safety announcements and communication with spectators during matches and other events.

The conference room will also be upgraded to meet the requirements of media organisations covering international sporting events.

A centralised technical management system, known as GTC, will allow operators to monitor and manage various technical installations across the stadium through a single electronic platform.

Morocco continues 2030 World Cup preparations

The MAD 1.265bn contract is part of Morocco’s wider programme to modernise its sports infrastructure ahead of the 2030 World Cup.

The Marrakech Grand Stadium is among the country’s major sporting venues undergoing renovation as Morocco prepares to host international football competitions.

The latest works are expected to strengthen the stadium’s technical capabilities and readiness while allowing it to continue hosting major sporting events beyond the 2030 World Cup.

With an 18-month implementation period, the project represents another significant stage in the ongoing redevelopment of one of Morocco’s key football stadiums.
