Real Madrid call for new La Liga president after fierce Javier Tebas attack

Real Madrid have called for a new La Liga president, accusing Javier Tebas of repeatedly using his position to attack and discredit the club.

The statement came after Tebas criticised Real Madrid’s complaints about refereeing decisions following the Madrid derby. In a post on his social media accounts, the La Liga president again used phrases he has previously directed at the club, including describing Real Madrid TV as “the system’s television”.

Tebas wrote: “When it is not Negreira, it is the referee. Enough of this blindness! Nobody with any degree of logic believes the usual excuse any more.”

Real Madrid responded with an official statement in which it strongly condemned what it described as Tebas’s continued use of his institutional role to target the club.

“Real Madrid considers it unacceptable that the president of La Liga should use his institutional position to continue belittling and attacking Real Madrid in the way he does in each of his interventions,” the club said.

“It is extremely concerning that the person responsible for representing and protecting the interests of all La Liga clubs continues to focus repeatedly on Real Madrid, turning our club into the permanent target of his public attacks.”

The club also criticised Tebas’s most recent comments, saying they had gone beyond a response to debate about refereeing.

“His latest interventions are particularly serious and surprising, and are not worthy of an official carrying out his responsibilities,” Real Madrid added.

“He chose to comment on an article written by an independent journalist for a digital media outlet, before turning his remarks into an attack on our club and even going as far as assessing our sporting strategy. This represents completely irresponsible conduct.”

Real Madrid said it was “surprising” that the La Liga president continued to use his time and personal social media accounts to damage the club’s public image.

“Instead of contributing, through the responsibilities of his position, to strengthening confidence in the institutions that are supposed to guarantee the neutrality of the competition, the president of La Liga dedicates his time and personal accounts to continuously trying to discredit Real Madrid publicly,” the statement said.

The club claimed that such behaviour “continues to damage the image of the competition and Spanish football around the world”.

Real Madrid ended its statement with a direct appeal for change at La Liga, saying professional football in Spain urgently needed a leader who could manage it and develop its full potential while respecting the fundamental duty of neutrality.

“We need someone who understands the nature of the position, because the president of La Liga is not the owner of the competition,” the club said. “He is an official who manages it in the service of the clubs that make it up and entrust him with its leadership. We need someone who carries out this task with integrity.”
