Uruguay replace injured Federico Valverde with Emiliano Martinez

Uruguay have ruled Federico Valverde out of the September international break and called up Palmeiras player Emiliano Martinez to replace him.

Real Madrid confirmed that Valverde has suffered a grade-three sprain to his left ankle.

The 28-year-old sustained the injury during Real Madrid’s derby against Atletico de Madrid in the seventh round of La Liga. The injury is understood to involve a tear to one of the ankle ligaments and could make walking difficult.

Despite being hurt shortly before half-time, Valverde continued playing and completed the match. Real Madrid lost 2-1.

Uruguay confirmed Martinez’s inclusion through their official account, with the Palmeiras player taking Valverde’s place in the squad.

The national team will face Japan on 24 September, South Korea on 28 September and India on 6 October.

The fixtures represent Uruguay’s first gathering under new manager Diego Forlan.
