Mikel Arteta agrees improved Arsenal contract to extend Emirates stay

Mikel Arteta will remain in charge of Arsenal after reaching a final agreement on an improved contract with the Premier League champions.

The Spaniard’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the campaign, but talks over an extension have been ongoing for several months. Negotiations were reported to be at an advanced stage earlier this month, and an agreement has now been completed.

The duration of Arteta’s new contract has not been disclosed. However, the agreement is expected to keep him at Emirates Stadium until at least his 10th year as Arsenal manager.

Arteta was appointed in December 2019 and has now secured a significant increase to his salary under the new terms. He currently earns 10 million pounds a year, with a further five million available through bonuses in his existing package.

The 44-year-old had already indicated that he wanted to continue at Arsenal, telling supporters last week that they had no reason to be concerned about his contractual situation.

Arteta also spoke of his satisfaction with life at the club and expressed his appreciation for the people he works with.

“They [the fans] don’t have to worry about any of that because I want to be here,” Arteta said. “I’m extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with.”
