U-20 Women’s World Cup: Moses Aduku sees bright future for Falconets after painful exit

Coach Moses Aduku remains confident in Nigeria’s future despite the Falconets’ heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria’s campaign ended on Sunday after Valerin Loboa scored in the second minute of stoppage time to give Colombia a dramatic 1-0 quarter-final victory at Stadion Miejski LKS in Lodz.

The late defeat ended the Falconets’ hopes of progressing to the semi-finals, but Aduku believes the experience gained in Poland will be valuable to the development of his young squad.

The Nigeria coach pointed to the tournament as an important platform for the players to develop and believes the country has seen evidence of a promising generation.

“First and foremost, this tournament is good for the young players,” Aduku told FIFA.

“It gives them the ability to grow and reach the next level. I think, in Nigeria, we have seen the future of our players. And I think the future is very bright.”

The Falconets had looked set to take the quarter-final into extra time after neither side managed to break the deadlock during the opening 90 minutes.

Nigeria created several opportunities but were unable to find the decisive finish, while Colombia also threatened at different stages of the contest.

Falconets fall to late Loboa strike

The closest Nigeria came to taking the lead came through Tumininu Adeshina, who stepped forward from defence before unleashing a powerful left-footed effort from distance.

Her shot appeared destined for the net, but Colombia goalkeeper Louisa Agudelo produced a fine save to tip the effort over the crossbar.

The first half ended goalless, with both teams having opportunities to open the scoring. Loboa and Isabella Diaz were among Colombia’s attacking threats, while Nigeria also tested the Colombian defence.

The Falconets continued to search for a breakthrough after the interval, with Favour Nkwocha, Kafayat Mafisere, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Onyedikachi Ekezie all having efforts as Nigeria pushed forward.

Their task became more difficult in the 77th minute when Mafisere was sent off, with VAR subsequently confirming the red card and leaving Nigeria to finish the contest with 10 players.

Aduku responded with changes as Winner Onajite David, Precious Oscar and Victory Lucky were introduced at different stages of the second half in an attempt to alter the game.

Nigeria fight on despite numerical disadvantage

Despite being reduced to 10 players, the Falconets continued to attack and created further openings in the closing stages.

Akekoromowei had another opportunity in the seventh minute of added time, but Nigeria could not convert it into an equaliser.

Colombia also continued to threaten, with Loboa repeatedly involved in their attacking play.

The forward eventually delivered the decisive moment in the 92nd minute, firing Colombia into the semi-finals and ending Nigeria’s hopes of extending their campaign.

The result was a cruel conclusion for the Falconets, who had remained competitive throughout a tightly contested quarter-final and were seconds away from forcing extra time.

Colombia will now face either DPR Korea or Canada for a place in the final four.
