Angers youngster Wahib El Antary called up by Morocco U17s after Egypt involvement

Angers youngster Wahib El Antary has been included in Morocco’s Under-17 squad after previously attending a training camp with Egypt’s youth teams.

The 2009-born player has been selected by Morocco Under-17 manager Ahmed El Kantari for the September camp and the Copa Espana, which will be held in Salou from 24 to 29 September. He is one of 28 players named in the squad.

El Antary will join the group at the Complexe Mohammed VI before the tournament in Spain, marking a new stage in his international development.

According to information obtained by Cairo24 Sport, El Antary attended a training camp with Egypt’s youth sides in July 2025. His performances attracted the attention of Egypt manager Ahmed El Kass.

A source quoted by the publication said Egypt’s coaching staff had tried to contact the player again in recent weeks, but did not receive the response they had hoped for. They later saw his name included in Morocco’s squad.

El Antary had therefore already experienced the environment of Egypt’s youth international teams before receiving his call-up from Morocco. His selection by the Lionceaux de l’Atlas gives him the opportunity to work with a group regarded as one of the country’s closely monitored emerging generations.

The September camp will allow El Kantari’s staff to assess El Antary alongside the rest of the squad. For the player, the immediate challenge will be to settle into the group and demonstrate that he can establish himself with Morocco Under-17s.

His position has been described differently by various sources. Some list El Antary as a midfielder, while Angers presented him as a right winger when he joined the club.

Angers recruited him from SO Cholet to play for their U19 Nationaux side. At 17, El Antary remains a developing player, but his move into a professional club’s academy underlines the attention being paid to his progress.

His situation also reflects the competition between national football federations for young players with links to more than one country. Morocco have secured his involvement in this camp, although the call-up does not permanently determine which national team he will represent.

Players with dual eligibility can still change their international allegiance in the future, meaning El Antary’s long-term choice remains open.

For now, his focus is on making an impression with Morocco Under-17s at the tournament in Spain, having already gained experience within Egypt’s youth international set-up.
