Younes Ebnoutalib chooses Germany over Morocco after Klopp call

Younes Ebnoutalib has chosen Germany over Morocco after talks with both national teams, with the intervention of German coach Jürgen Klopp playing a key role in the Eintracht Frankfurt striker’s decision.

The 23-year-old made the decision after being contacted by Morocco, who had remained interested in securing his international future. Ebnoutalib was eligible to represent both countries because he was born in Germany to a Moroccan father and German mother.

He had also previously represented Morocco at under-15 level, leaving the door open for a possible return to the Atlas Lions.

Morocco’s national team coach Mohamed Ouahbi had spoken directly with Ebnoutalib as part of efforts to convince him to choose the North African side. According to AFP, Ouahbi had been following the striker since the previous season and had explained Morocco’s plans to him.

However, Germany stepped up its efforts after Klopp became involved in the process.

“When Klopp calls, you can’t say no,” he declares.

Ebnoutalib revealed his decision after receiving his first call-up to the German national team. His choice brings an end to the discussions over which country he would represent at senior level.

Klopp had personally spoken with the striker during a visit to Eintracht Frankfurt in an attempt to persuade him to join the Germany squad.

Sky Sport reported in early September that the conversation had taken place during Klopp’s visit to the club. The German coach’s involvement came as Ebnoutalib’s rise continued to attract attention.

The striker’s progress has been particularly rapid. He was still playing in the Regionalliga, the fourth tier of German football, before moving through the levels and establishing himself within the Eintracht Frankfurt squad.

His performances at the beginning of the season further accelerated his development and eventually led to his inclusion in Klopp’s first Germany squad.

Sky Sport confirmed Ebnoutalib’s call-up on 17 September, completing a remarkable rise for the young striker.

Ebnoutalib has also spoken about Cristiano Ronaldo’s influence on his career. According to Sky Sport Deutschland, the Portugal forward is the player’s football role model.

Despite Morocco’s efforts to convince him, Ebnoutalib ultimately responded positively to Germany’s approach and Klopp’s personal intervention.

His decision means the striker will now begin a new chapter with the German national team after previously wearing Morocco’s colours at youth level.
