Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso says Al Ahly role would be an “honour”

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has revealed for the first time that he would consider it an “honour” to manage Egyptian giants Al Ahly, while insisting he remains committed to his current club.

The Portuguese coach, who recently guided Sundowns to the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup title with a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli, addressed speculation linking him with the Cairo club during an interview with Modern Sport TV.

Cardoso said he could not discuss any potential move while under contract with the South African champions.

“I have a contract with Sundowns, and I cannot talk to any club as long as my contract with Sundowns is ongoing,” he said.

He added: “I have great respect for Al Ahly and it would certainly be a great honour for me to be their coach, but I respect my contract with Sundowns and I am very happy to be part of the Sundowns family.”

The 54-year-old also reflected on Al Ahly’s absence from this season’s CAF Champions League, describing the club as an integral part of African football while highlighting the strength of other contenders.

“When I talk about African football, Al Ahly must be mentioned, but there are other big and strong teams that must be respected that are present in the Champions League, such as Zamalek and Pyramids,” Cardoso said.

“The competition between the current teams will be fierce.”

Cardoso also singled out Al Ahly midfielder Imam Ashour as one of the Egyptian players who has impressed him most.

“Many Egyptian players have impressed me, such as Imam Ashour. He has great abilities and potential, and I told him that when I met him before,” he said.
