Al Ahly made no move for Mahmoud El Gazzar this summer, says agent

Al Ahly did not reopen talks to sign National Bank defender Mahmoud El Gazzar during the recent summer transfer window, despite renewed speculation linking the Egyptian champions with the centre-back, according to the player’s agent.

El Gazzar has been repeatedly linked with a return to Al Ahly in recent transfer windows, but a deal has yet to materialise.

The 27-year-old came through Al Ahly’s youth ranks between 2018 and 2021 and made two first-team appearances before joining National Bank in 2022.

Speaking to MBC Egypt 2, his agent Mohamed Abdel Gaber dismissed claims that fresh negotiations took place this summer.

“Al Ahly did not talk to us in the recent transfer window to sign Mahmoud El Gazzar, but there were negotiations in previous periods,” he said.

Abdel Gaber revealed that the closest the player came to rejoining Al Ahly was during the summer of 2025.

“In the summer of 2025, there were already negotiations and things were very close, but suddenly the deal stopped and we don’t know the reasons,” he added.

While confirming there were no discussions during the latest window, the agent did not rule out future interest from Al Ahly or other clubs.

“Negotiations did not resume in the last transfer window, but it is possible that negotiations will resume with Al Ahly or any other club,” he said.

“If we receive any suitable offer, I believe that the National Bank’s management will not stand in the player’s way.”

Al Ahly currently have four recognised centre-backs in Yasser Ibrahim, Yassin Marei, Hadi Riad and Ashraf Dari after Amr El Gazzar suffered a cruciate ligament injury.

Since joining National Bank in 2022, Mahmoud El Gazzar has made 109 appearances for the club, establishing himself as one of the team’s regular defenders.
