I convinced Marvin Senaya to choose Ghana over Togo – Emmanuel Adebayor

Togo football legend Emmanuel Adebayor has revealed that he played a decisive role in convincing Marvin Senaya to represent Ghana instead of Togo at international level.

Senaya, who is eligible for both Ghana and Togo through his family heritage, received call-ups from both national teams in March 2026 before making his international decision.

The 25-year-old opted to join the Black Stars and went on to feature in all four of Ghana’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to 3Sports, former Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid striker Adebayor said he encouraged the defender to seize what he believed was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“I was the one who made the decision for him, actually,” Adebayor said.

“I told him there is no other choice. This is the only chance you have [to play for Ghana] because this [World Cup] can be your major tournament in your life.”

Adebayor added that he was delighted to see Senaya’s contribution during the tournament.

“I was happy for him. Ghanaians were proud of him.”

Senaya has since been sidelined with an injury sustained during Ghana’s Round of 32 defeat by Colombia at Kansas City Stadium on 3 July.

The Auxerre defender is, however, making encouraging progress in his rehabilitation and has been spotted training in the gym as he continues work on his right leg ahead of a possible return.

Ghana have already opened camp in Accra as they prepare for a busy international window under head coach Carlos Queiroz.

The Black Stars begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign away to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on 24 September before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

They will conclude the window with a friendly against Morocco in Tangier on 4 October.
