Brighton’s ‘rugby tactic’ helps dismantle Arsenal in 3-0 defeat

Brighton produced a tactical masterclass to beat Arsenal 3-0 at the Amex on Saturday, using a direct approach inspired by rugby to unsettle the Gunners’ defence and end their winning run at the start of the season.

The key figure in the victory was not one of Brighton’s attackers but goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, according to match data published by British newspaper The Sun. The 24-year-old Netherlands international, who was linked with a move to Bayern Munich last summer, repeatedly bypassed Brighton’s usual build-up from the back in favour of long, direct passes.

That approach targeted what Brighton identified as a weakness in Arsenal’s defensive structure. Verbruggen completed 22 passes, most of them aimed towards the final third, forcing Arsenal centre-backs Gabriel and Ezri Konsa into a series of aerial duels.

The plan was devised by Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, who had previously been involved in a dispute and verbal exchanges with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta last season. Hurzeler instructed his players to regain possession as quickly as possible and as close to Arsenal’s goal as they could.

How Brighton created the opening

Brighton’s first goal illustrated the strategy. After Verbruggen took control of the ball, he sent a long pass towards the right side, the area Brighton repeatedly targeted to create a numerical advantage. The move eventually led to Pascal Groß scoring with a powerful long-range effort.

Arsenal are regarded as one of the Premier League’s strongest teams in contests for first and second balls. However, Brighton were able to recover possession quickly by overloading the right flank and capitalising on any poorly directed header from the Arsenal defence.

Hurzeler therefore demanded constant forward movement from right-back Ferdi Kadıoglu, whose role was to help surround Arsenal players and maintain pressure on that side of the pitch.

Arteta admitted afterwards that Arsenal had been outplayed by Brighton’s approach on the south coast.

“I am hugely disappointed. It is a tough lesson for us and they deserved to win,” he said.

“We have to congratulate them on the victory. There are certain basics that are necessary in football, especially in the Premier League, and we were completely short of them.”

Arteta also blamed Arsenal’s technical errors and failure to follow their usual principles.

“The problem was the number of technical mistakes we made and the fact that we did not stick to any of the principles of play that we have to follow,” he added.

“But that will not take away from what the players have achieved over the past six or seven weeks since the World Cup.”
