Togo captain Djene doubtful for Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers

Togo captain Djene Dakonam is a doubt for the opening matches of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying campaign after sustaining an injury while playing for Getafe.

The 34-year-old centre-back was substituted in the 65th minute of Getafe’s 1-0 win over Malaga on Sunday. He is due to undergo further medical examinations to establish the extent of the problem and determine whether he will be fit to join Togo’s squad.

Djene’s availability is uncertain with Togo scheduled to face Burundi on 25 September before taking on Zambia four days later, on 29 September.

Patrice Neveu was present as the Eperviers began their training camp in Lome on Monday, but the head coach said he was still waiting for more information about his captain’s condition.

“For now, I am waiting for Djene’s return after he had a problem in his last match. I will speak to him on the phone soon. I hope all his medical results will be positive so that he can arrive in the best possible condition,” Neveu said.

Djene’s possible absence is one of the main concerns for Togo before the start of their qualifying schedule. The team must first prepare for the meeting with Burundi on 25 September, followed by the fixture against Zambia on 29 September.
