Spain extend World Cup-winning boss Luis de la Fuente’s contract to 2032

Spain have extended Luis de la Fuente’s contract after the manager guided them to the World Cup title in the United States, with the agreement lasting two years longer than expected.

Rafael Louzan, president of the Spanish Football Federation, had indicated that De la Fuente’s new deal would run at least until 2030. However, the federation has added a further two years, taking the contract through to 2032.

It is the longest contract ever awarded by the Spanish Football Federation to a national team manager, according to Marca.

The decision reflects De la Fuente’s record in charge. He has won the European Championship with Spain’s youth teams and senior side, while Spain also lifted the Nations League under his management before their latest continental success.

This year, De la Fuente completed an outstanding spell as national team manager by leading Spain to the World Cup title in the United States. He could now add six more major trophies to his record during the remainder of his new contract.

His next mandate includes the 2028 and 2032 European Championships, the 2030 World Cup and three editions of the Nations League.

The contract extension was discussed at Las Rozas, the headquarters of the Spanish federation. During the presentation, the trophies won by De la Fuente with Spain were displayed, with the manager personally bringing the World Cup to the event.

Spain’s stated ambition is to retain the World Cup on home soil in 2030. As one of the host nations, they are already guaranteed a place in the tournament, although the venue for the final has not yet been decided.

Morocco is among the leading candidates to stage the decisive match.

De la Fuente said he was already looking beyond Spain’s latest triumph and towards the possibility of winning a third world title.

“Every time I look at our emblem with these two stars, I think a third one would be even better,” he said, referring to Spain’s overall number of World Cup victories.
