Yan Diomande gives Jose Mourinho a fresh selection dilemma at Real Madrid

Yan Diomande’s impressive display against Atletico Madrid has intensified the pressure on Jose Mourinho to consider changing Real Madrid’s starting line-up, with the 19-year-old Ivorian winger making a growing case to replace Vinicius.

Diomande had already made a strong impression during his previous appearance against Elche, and he again provided one of the few positives in the second half at Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid were forced to play with 10 men after defender Huijsen was sent off, leaving Mourinho with a difficult task as his side tried to remain competitive.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Mourinho turned to his substitutes after Real Madrid conceded the opening goal and brought Diomande on for Vinicius. The visitors conceded a second goal only five minutes after the former Leipzig player entered the game, but Diomande continued to attack and tried to give the right flank the energy that Vinicius had been unable to provide.

He completed four of his six attempted dribbles and recorded a passing accuracy of 90%. Diomande also contributed defensively, winning nine of his 12 duels during his 36 minutes on the pitch.

Despite Real Madrid having a player fewer, Diomande managed the same number of successful dribbles as Vinicius and Kylian Mbappe combined across the entire match.

His introduction also brought an unusual change in recent weeks, with Vinicius substituted before the hour mark, leaving the field in the 54th minute. The Brazilian accepted the decision, shaking hands with Mourinho and the rest of the coaching staff before taking his place on the bench.

At the final whistle, however, Vinicius headed directly to the dressing room, unlike some of his team-mates, after another match in which he remained well below his best level.

That situation leaves Mourinho facing an increasingly complicated decision. The Portuguese manager is seeing a new arrival and the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history outperform one of the most influential players of the club’s modern era.

The choice is made more difficult by Diomande’s own positional preference. His late involvement against both Elche and Atletico Madrid suggested he is more comfortable operating from the left wing, the position usually associated with Vinicius.

Once the international break ends and preparations begin for the meeting with Villarreal, Mourinho will therefore have to decide whether to retain a key player of Vinicius’ stature or place his trust in the emerging Diomande.
