Cucurella criticism deepens Real Madrid’s left-back problem after derby defeat

Marc Cucurella has come under renewed scrutiny after a disappointing display in Real Madrid’s derby defeat by Atletico Madrid, a result that saw the club drop to third in La Liga.

The decisive moment came when David Hancko sent a long pass towards Giuliano Simeone. The Atletico forward broke behind the Real Madrid defence and won a penalty, while the incident also led to Dean Huijsen being sent off.

Atletico took advantage of their numerical superiority to move ahead and extend their lead. Real Madrid reduced the deficit to 2-1, but the home side held on to claim victory on Sunday.

Cucurella was among the players criticised after the match. The left-back has continued to frustrate Real Madrid supporters and the coaching staff with a series of below-par performances since the start of the season.

Some observers believe his difficulties have been made worse by the lack of defensive support from Vinicius Junior on the same flank, increasing the demands placed on the Spanish defender.

Canizares questions Cucurella’s return to form

Santiago Canizares, the former Spain, Real Madrid and Valencia goalkeeper, has questioned whether Cucurella can recover the form he showed for La Roja at the 2026 World Cup.

Canizares’ comments, reported by Estadio Deportivo, were made during an interview with Cadena COPE.

“Cucurella is not the player we saw at the World Cup, at the European Championship or generally with the Spain national team,” he said.

“I have no doubt about his talent, because his quality is beyond question, but he is not the same player.”

Canizares believes the left-back position remains a problem for Real Madrid this season. His assessment echoes that of former Real Madrid player Poli Rincon, who previously questioned whether Jose Mourinho’s style of play and the team’s current system suit Cucurella’s strengths.

Cucurella’s decline has also been attributed by some to the demands of the schedule. He did not have enough time to rest during the summer after representing Spain at the 2026 World Cup, leaving him with little opportunity to recover before the new campaign began.

The ongoing concerns have added to Real Madrid’s defensive difficulties following the defeat by Atletico Madrid, with Cucurella’s performances and his understanding with Vinicius Junior now under particular scrutiny.
