Al Ahly and defender Mohamed Hany contract renewal talks hit dead end

Al Ahly’s negotiations with right-back Mohamed Hany over a new contract have reached an impasse, with the two parties yet to reach an agreement over the terms of a renewal.

Hany’s current contract with the Egyptian giants expires at the end of the 2026/27 season, meaning he will be free to negotiate and sign a pre-contract agreement with another club from January if no extension is reached.

Al Ahly have already presented the experienced defender with a renewal offer as part of the club’s new salary structure and wage-cap policy implemented by the football management.

However, Hany is demanding an adjustment to the participation-based percentage clause included in the club’s proposal. The right-back believes his long-standing service to Al Ahly should be taken into consideration, particularly after making more than 400 appearances for the club.

Hany is reportedly standing firm on his request, but Al Ahly have rejected his demand and informed the player that the offer currently on the table is their final proposal.

The 30-year-old is currently in his 13th season with Al Ahly’s first team after being promoted to the senior squad in 2014. Although his performances have often been subject to criticism because of inconsistency, he has remained a key option at right-back over the years.

Since Ahmed Fathi’s departure in 2020, several players have been used in the position, but none has been able to permanently dislodge Hany as the club’s first-choice right-back.

Should the two sides fail to resolve their differences, Al Ahly could be forced to explore the transfer market for a replacement.

Karim Fouad remains one of the club’s available options, while Ahmed Eid is also on the books but is reportedly outside the plans of coach Houcine Ammouta and could leave the club.

Youngster Ibrahim Al-Asyouti is another option within the squad, although he is currently recovering from a cruciate ligament injury and is nearing a return to action.

With uncertainty surrounding Hany’s future, Al Ahly are also considering bringing in a new right-back, with Tarek Alaa reportedly among the names on the club’s shortlist to strengthen the right side of the defence.
