Egypt knocked out of African Volleyball Championship by Algeria

Egypt’s men’s volleyball team were eliminated from the African Championship in the quarter-finals after losing 3-2 to Algeria in sets.

Algeria took the opening set 25-17 before Egypt responded by winning the next two 25-20 and 25-19.

The match then turned in Algeria’s favour, with the team claiming the fourth set 25-23 before edging the deciding set 15-13.

The result means Egypt have failed to reach the African Championship semi-finals for the first time since 1997.

Egypt entered the tournament as defending champions, having won the previous edition. They are the competition’s second-most successful team with nine titles, behind Tunisia’s 11.

The African Championship is being hosted by Tunisia from 15 to 25 September.

A total of 16 teams are taking part. The winners will qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, while the top three teams will earn places at the 2027 World Championship.
