Luis de la Fuente extends Spain contract to 2032: ‘The best is yet to come’

Luis de la Fuente says Spain must remain hungry for success after agreeing a new contract with the Spanish Football Federation that will keep him in charge until 2032.

The previous agreement with La Roja was due to run until 2028, but the federation confirmed that its board had approved a further extension for the head coach.

The announcement came as Spain prepared for their first match since winning the World Cup, with the team set to wear a second star on their shirt after lifting the trophy in the United States.

Speaking at the contract renewal ceremony, de la Fuente said: “We have to keep developing and continue fighting to win. People do not get used to victories, and success lies in competing – that is guaranteed.

“We are not satisfied with what we have achieved so far. The best is yet to come, believe me. There are many good things ahead that we will enjoy.”

De la Fuente also paid tribute to people who had shared his journey, including family members who have since died.

“I remember many of the people who have accompanied me on this journey, and I also remember those who are no longer here – my father, my mother and my brother,” he said.

“They enjoyed what we achieved immensely, but they would have enjoyed this success even more.”

The Spain manager was also asked about a special moment among the squad and backroom staff away from competitive matches, after a supporter raised an incident that had not previously been made public.

“At the European Championship, we came up with a term of our own: the family,” said de la Fuente. “Being together is a source of happiness and pride.

“One of the really beautiful moments, believe me, is when everyone in the delegation gathers to have something before lunch and build team spirit. It is an emotional and beautiful moment, and it allows us to recover our energy for our daily responsibilities.

“It matters to everyone. And, besides, we do not have to pay, which makes it even better.”

The president of the Spanish Football Federation presented de la Fuente with a shirt bearing his name and the number 2032, marking the year his new contract ends.

De la Fuente worked through Spain’s youth teams, beginning with the under-18 side, before progressing to the senior national team. He has been in charge of the first team since the summer of 2021.

He has overseen 50 matches, recording 40 wins, seven draws and three defeats. During his tenure, Spain have won the UEFA Nations League once, the UEFA European Championship once and the World Cup once.

De la Fuente led Spain to their second World Cup triumph in La Roja’s history at the 2026 tournament, staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final.
