Amina Orfi becomes youngest squash world number one in history

Amina Orfi has become the world’s youngest squash world number one after the 19-year-old Egyptian reached the top of the latest Professional Squash Association rankings.

The rankings are published every Monday by the Professional Squash Association, which confirmed Orfi had taken first place for the first time in her career.

Her rise follows a series of major victories in recent months. She won the World Championship in May before claiming the British Open title, then began the current season by securing victories at the London Classic and the Qatar Classic.

Orfi is the fifth Egyptian woman to lead the world rankings, following Raneem El Welily, Nour El Sherbini, Nouran Gohar and Hania El Hammamy.

Raneem El Welily was the first Egyptian woman to reach number one, achieving the feat in September 2015.

Orfi’s elevation also sets a new age record in the sport. She has surpassed the previous mark held by New Zealand’s Susan Devoy, who became world number one in 1984.

Her Qatar Classic success made Orfi the 18th woman to top the squash world rankings. She now joins a group of leading figures in the sport, including Malaysia’s Nicol David and Australia’s Michelle Martin.

The latest rankings see Hania El Hammamy drop to second, while Nour El Sherbini remains in third place.

Fellow Egyptian Farida El Elkady also retains fourth position in the world rankings.

The Egypt Open squash tournament will take place from 6 to 16 October.
