Paris Saint-Germain edge Marseille in Ligue 1 ‘Classique’

Paris Saint-Germain beat Marseille 2-1 in the French ‘Classique’ to claim their third consecutive win in Ligue 1.

Ferran Torres and Marquinhos scored for Paris Saint-Germain, while Angel Gomes replied for Marseille in a match played during the fifth round of the competition.

The result continues a positive run for Paris Saint-Germain after a difficult spell in which they went four matches without a victory, losing twice and drawing twice. They have now defeated Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava, Brest and Marseille in succession.

Marseille, meanwhile, suffered their fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions and remain in serious difficulty near the bottom of the table.

Paris Saint-Germain took the lead in the 66th minute when Torres headed home with a well-directed effort. Marseille responded six minutes later, with Gomes finding the net from inside the penalty area.

The visitors regained their advantage in the 74th minute. Marquinhos struck from inside the 18-yard box to put Paris Saint-Germain back in front.

Marseille’s task became more difficult in the 77th minute when Timothy Weah was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. The dismissal came after all three goals had been scored.

The victory takes Paris Saint-Germain to eight points and sixth place in the Ligue 1 table.

Marseille remain on three points and are 17th, second from bottom. It is the first time the club have occupied a position in the relegation places since the 2011-2012 season.
