Carrick says Manchester United ‘did enough to win’ Fulham draw

Michael Carrick says Manchester United deserved more than a point from their 1-1 draw with Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday, but admits the result was at least a positive outcome after a number of difficult moments.

United have taken five points from their opening five league fixtures, with one victory leaving them 12th in the Premier League table.

“We did enough to win the game,” Carrick told BBC Sport. “I think we were capable of winning. It was an unfortunate own goal, but we were good for most of the match.”

Fulham’s goalkeeper produced several impressive saves, according to Carrick, who felt the game could have developed differently.

“Their goalkeeper made some brilliant saves and, on another day, we would have conceded two or three,” he said. “I was pleased with our reaction. The players kept their confidence and continued to do the right things.

“I think one point is the least we could have taken.”

Carrick also questioned the circumstances surrounding Fulham’s goal, suggesting Matheus Cunha may have been fouled before the ball found its way through the United defence.

“I think there may have been a foul on Matheus Cunha first, and there is an argument for that,” he said. “The ball went through one of the players and everything happened very quickly.

“We have been fortunate in a lot of similar moments. Thankfully, we came away with something positive from the game.”

United’s run of results has created increased scrutiny around the club, but Carrick said that attention was not what concerned him most.

Asked whether the surrounding noise was affecting him, he replied: “No. What bothers me is that we want better results. We want more points.

“We will go through periods when things do not go well, and we have been through one of those spells when small things have turned into big things.”

Carrick stressed that United’s current position did not reflect his belief that the team had reached an acceptable level.

“We do not think things are perfect by any means,” he said. “We need to win matches.

“The supporters were excellent as usual today, and we have to give them a reason to keep singing.”
