Hamdy Fathy ruled out of Egypt squad with injury

Hamdy Fathy will miss Egypt’s upcoming international camp after sustaining an injury while playing for Al-Wakrah, national team director Ibrahim Hassan has confirmed.

The 31-year-old midfielder will not recover in time to take part in any of Egypt’s three matches during the international break, which runs for three weeks across September and October.

“Hamdy Fathy suffered an injury with his Qatari club, Al-Wakrah, and it has been confirmed that he will be absent from the national team camp,” Hassan told the Egyptian Football Association’s media centre.

“The player will be out of the camp because it will be difficult for him to be fit in time for the three matches. He joins Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguie and Yasser Ibrahim, who are also absent through injury.”

Fathy picked up the injury during Al-Wakrah’s Qatar Cup match against Al-Sailiya.

Egypt are scheduled to begin their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with matches against Angola and South Sudan on 25 and 29 September respectively.

They will then play a friendly against South Africa on 4 October.

Fathy’s absence is a further setback for Egypt, with Trezeguie and Yasser Ibrahim already ruled out of the camp because of injuries.

The Al-Wakrah player has won 67 international caps for Egypt and scored three goals. He was also among the key members of the squad involved in the 2026 World Cup.
