Hamdy Fathy helps Al-Wakrah begin Qatar Cup with victory over Al-Sailiya

Hamdy Fathy played as Al-Wakrah opened their Qatar Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Al-Sailiya.

Paulo Caleoni scored the only goal of the match with a header in the second minute, giving Al-Wakrah an early lead they held until the final whistle.

The Qatar Cup features 20 teams from the first and second divisions. Al-Wakrah will play four matches during the league phase, with the eight highest-ranked sides progressing to the quarter-finals.

Fathy completed the full match, making it five consecutive appearances this season for Al-Wakrah without being substituted.

Al-Wakrah’s next fixture in the competition will be against Al-Kharaitiyat on 28 September.

The midfielder will then travel to Cairo to join the Egypt squad at their training camp as they prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
