Union Berlin consider move for Austrian-Nigerian defender David Alaba

Union Berlin are reportedly considering a move for former Real Madrid defender David Alaba as they look to strengthen a defence that has endured a difficult start to the Bundesliga season.

The Bundesliga outfit could turn their attention to the experienced Austrian-Nigerian defender, who remains without a club after leaving Real Madrid.

Union’s defensive problems have become increasingly concerning after the opening four league matches. The capital club have conceded 17 goals during that period, with their latest outing highlighting the extent of their struggles after they suffered a heavy 7-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Head coach Mauro Lustrinelli is continuing to reshape the team as Union transition towards a back-four system, but the side has lacked both experience and leadership at the back.

That is where Alaba could potentially provide a solution. The 34-year-old brings vast experience at the highest level and has the versatility to operate as a central defender as well as in other defensive positions. His ability to provide leadership and composure could appeal to Union as they look to stabilise their backline.

Alaba spent the majority of his career with Bayern Munich, establishing himself as one of the club’s most successful defenders before leaving Germany for Real Madrid. He made 281 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern during his time with the Bavarian giants.

His experience in German football could therefore make a return to the Bundesliga a natural option, although Union would still need to reach an agreement with the veteran defender before any move could materialise.

Union Berlin could now weigh up their options as they seek defensive reinforcements capable of bringing greater experience and stability to the squad.

With 17 goals already conceded in their first four Bundesliga matches, the club’s defensive situation has placed added importance on finding an experienced solution, with Alaba emerging as a priority target.
