Oblak defends Atletico Madrid players after Real Madrid derby controversy

Jan Oblak said Atletico Madrid deserved their 2-1 victory over Real Madrid despite allowing their rivals back into the game, while refusing to criticise the referee over two incidents that became the focus of debate.

The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper told DAZN after the derby: “We did not keep a clean sheet, which is disappointing. We played well, but we gave them the chance to get back into the match.

“The win is important and we are extremely happy with the three points, but La Liga is a long season.”

The match was followed by questions over why Atletico players were not sent off. Oblak said the referee had reviewed both incidents before reaching a decision.

“The referee checked both situations and made his decision. I cannot say anything more than that,” he said.

“If those situations did not warrant red cards in the match against Villarreal, then I do not think they warrant them here either.”

Oblak was also asked about the atmosphere in the tunnel at half-time. Reports of tension had surrounded the interval, but the goalkeeper played down the incident.

“I was there and nothing serious happened,” he said. “There were some different opinions from both teams, but I did not know about any dismissals.”

The victory has left Atletico’s dressing room in a positive mood, according to Oblak, who said the team had performed well during a difficult run of matches.

“The dressing room is in excellent condition,” he added. “We have played very well in the last few matches, even though they have been extremely difficult.”

Oblak was finally asked about Julian Alvarez, who had been booed by some Atletico supporters before kick-off.

He replied: “That will be appreciated by the fans.”
