Atletico Madrid fans target Mbappe and Vinicius with Ceuta banner

Atletico Madrid supporters directed criticism at Real Madrid forwards Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior before Sunday’s derby at the Wanda Metropolitano, after a controversy involving Ceuta.

The home crowd also jeered Julian Alvarez, who was named among the substitutes, shortly before the match began. The Argentine had previously been subjected to strong whistles from Atletico supporters at the stadium.

The hostility was then extended to Mbappe and Vinicius, with the two Real Madrid players singled out moments before kick-off.

A banner displayed by Atletico fans in the Fondo Sur read: “Ceuta is Spain, we neither hide it nor play it down.”

The message was aimed at Mbappe and Vinicius, who had refused to wear the full Real Madrid team shirt in a show of solidarity with the people of Ceuta, which is at the centre of a major crisis.

Atletico hosted Real Madrid in a fiercely contested derby on Sunday. The incident was reported by Foot Mercato, while footage of the banner was shared by Diario SPORT on 20 September 2026.

The supporters’ reaction came after Alvarez had again faced a hostile reception from the Wanda Metropolitano crowd, before the focus shifted to the visiting pair.
