Alexander Isak puts Liverpool ahead against Bournemouth in Premier League week five

Alexander Isak scored Liverpool’s opening goal against Bournemouth after turning in a deflected cross from Cody Gakpo, as the visitors took the lead in a closely contested Premier League match.

Gakpo’s delivery from the right took a touch off the Bournemouth defence and fell to Isak, who finished into the left side of the net. The Liverpool forward was then booked for an inappropriate celebration.

Bournemouth had created the earlier chances. Evanilson saw a close-range backheel saved impressively by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, while Ryan Christie headed over from Alex Scott’s corner.

Scott also delivered a number of dangerous set-pieces from the left and right. One free-kick was claimed by Alisson, while another was cleared by the Liverpool defence into midfield. Bournemouth won two corners during the opening stages, compared with none for Liverpool at that point.

Liverpool threatened through a free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai after Florian Wirtz had been fouled near the edge of the penalty area, but Szoboszlai’s effort went over the crossbar. The Hungary midfielder later received a yellow card.

Bournemouth continued to look for an equaliser through Christie, who fired wide from inside the box before meeting a cross from Ryan Vitor with another effort that went past the left post.

Liverpool also had opportunities to extend their advantage. Alexander Isak shot from inside the area but his effort was blocked and went behind for a corner, while a further attempt from outside the box went wide.

Bradley Barcola tested Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic with a shot from inside the penalty area, but the goalkeeper made the save. Barcola was also flagged offside after moving beyond the Bournemouth defensive line and later had an attempted run down the left stopped by the defence.

Milos Kerkez saw a shot from outside the box deflect out for a throw-in, while a cross from Isak on the right evaded everyone and went out for a goal kick.

Bournemouth won another free-kick in an attacking position after a foul by Gakpo, and Scott’s delivery was headed clear by Liverpool. Scott was subsequently caught offside after positioning himself behind the visitors’ defence.

The match began at a measured pace, with the score goalless after the first 15 minutes and still level after half an hour. Liverpool were recorded as having seven shots to Bournemouth’s three.

After the interval, Szoboszlai sent a Liverpool corner into the penalty area but Bournemouth cleared the danger. He later saw another free-kick from the right side of the attack dealt with by the defence.

Liverpool made two substitutions during the match, with Trey Nyoni and Victor Munoz among the players listed in the changes.
