Mdaka demands greater finishing from Amajita after COSAFA U20 victory

Amajita began their defence of the COSAFA U20 championship with a 3-0 win over neighbours Lesotho in Maputo, Mozambique, but coach Raymond Mdaka wants his side to be more clinical.

Steve “Stevie G” Mendes scored twice and Kaizer Chiefs team-mate Teboho Mlangeni added the other goal in a dominant opening Group B performance from the defending champions.

The result was especially important because only the group winners are guaranteed a place in the semi-finals. Mdaka welcomed the victory but said the significance extended beyond the three points.

“Very, very important, honestly, even if it had been one, to win the opening game. Always, you know, dealing with players who still need to grow a bit, so a loss obviously would affect the team; it will affect the players, the technical team, and everybody. But the win on its own says a lot, it gives us more energy and also keeps us positive heading to the semifinals,” said Mdaka.

Despite the convincing scoreline, the coach was dissatisfied with the number of chances Amajita failed to convert against Lesotho.

The team continued to follow SAFA’s national playing philosophy throughout the match, even after Mdaka made several changes during the second half. The coach said the African champions remained committed to maintaining the country’s national identity.

Mendes earned particular praise for the way he finished both of his opportunities. His two goals have given him an early platform to make an impact during the tournament.

Amajita are also set to receive a further boost, with star player Emile Witbooi expected to join the squad ahead of tomorrow’s crucial Group B fixture against Angola.

Angola currently lead the group, and the meeting could prove decisive in determining which team finishes first and reaches the semi-finals. Mdaka’s side will therefore need another strong display, combined with greater accuracy in front of goal, to keep their title defence on course.
