Lamine Yamal breaks Vinicius Junior record with 50th La Liga assist

Lamine Yamal has become the youngest player to reach 50 assists in La Liga since at least the 2013-14 season, surpassing a record previously held by Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior.

The Barcelona winger reached the milestone at the age of 19 years and 68 days during his side’s 3-1 victory over Sevilla. His two assists for Raphinha took his total to 51 in 159 official appearances for Barcelona’s first team across all competitions.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Yamal played a decisive role in Barcelona’s latest win. Raphinha’s hat-trick helped Hansi Flick’s side maintain top spot and continue their perfect winning record, while Yamal created two of the three goals.

The match did not begin as Barcelona had hoped. Sevilla took the lead in the 19th minute when Youssef Fofana headed home, but Raphinha restored parity only three minutes later.

Yamal had already threatened the Andalusian side in the eighth minute, forcing goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos to push his curling effort away. The ball eventually struck the post.

After half-time, the teenager’s influence became even more pronounced. In the 52nd minute, he delivered a cross which Raphinha headed into the net after getting ahead of Sangante, putting Barcelona 2-1 in front.

The Brazilian completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute to secure a 3-1 victory for the Catalan club.

Yamal clears Vinicius mark

Vinicius had previously held the record after registering his 50th assist for Real Madrid in May 2023. He was 22 years and 298 days old at the time.

Yamal has therefore achieved the same landmark three years and 230 days earlier than the Brazilian, establishing a sizeable age gap between the two records.

The achievement also highlights the consistency of a player developed by Barcelona’s academy. His 51 assists in 159 matches equate to one assist every slightly more than three games.

That rate underlines the young winger’s importance to Barcelona’s attacking play. His display in Seville provided another example: although Raphinha claimed the headlines with three goals, Yamal supplied the passes for two of them.

The latest milestone adds to the growing list of records Yamal has set at the age of 19, as he moves ahead of players who had already established themselves at the highest level of the game.
