Sofyan Amrabat reveals why Ajax project convinced him to return to the Netherlands

Sofyan Amrabat says Ajax’s ambition to challenge for honours on three fronts was the main reason he chose to join the club this summer.

The experienced midfielder moved to Amsterdam on a free transfer at the end of August, signing a contract that runs until mid-2028. Speaking to ESPN, the Morocco international said the plans outlined by Ajax technical director Jordi Cruijff had made a particularly strong impression.

“What appealed to me most was his ambition. He wants to win and be competitive on three fronts. I also really want to win and I am determined,” said Amrabat.

Cruijff had already made contact with the midfielder several months before the move. He approached Amrabat in April, when the player was still at Real Betis.

After completing his switch to Ajax, Amrabat said Cruijff’s vision had sparked his interest in the club’s plans in Amsterdam.

“He told me about the project at Ajax. It was a great story. We stayed in contact throughout that time,” Amrabat said then.

Head coach Michel Sanchez later also contacted the midfielder, making it clear to Amrabat that Ajax were keen to bring him to Amsterdam.

The 78-cap Morocco international has since praised Cruijff for the work he has done so far, although he accepts the final judgement will come at the end of the campaign.

“I think he has already proved himself. Of course, we will have to see where we are at the end of the season. But I think he has put together a very strong team, with an excellent staff. Hats off to him,” Amrabat said.
