Brighton stun Arsenal to end champions’ perfect start with 3-0 win

Brighton ended Arsenal’s perfect start to the season with a commanding 3-0 victory over the Premier League champions on Saturday.

Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas put Brighton in control before half-time, while Chema Andres added a third after the break as Arsenal’s title defence suffered a first defeat. The result lifted Brighton into third place and marked an impressive celebration of the club’s 125th anniversary.

Arsenal had won all seven of their matches since the beginning of the campaign, including their opening four Premier League fixtures. However, they were overwhelmed by a Brighton side who repeatedly exposed their defence and could have scored more.

Gross opened the scoring after 31 minutes, sending a low effort beyond Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and in off the post. Brighton then doubled their advantage when Kostoulas finished a counter-attack with another precise low shot.

Andres completed the scoring with a close-range header after the interval, leaving Arsenal unable to respond as their unbeaten run came to an emphatic end.

Villa leave Tottenham still without a win

Aston Villa secured their first league victory of the season by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2, leaving the hosts still searching for their opening Premier League win.

Tottenham scored their first league goals of the campaign, but Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made several important saves to keep his side ahead.

Villa took the lead in first-half stoppage time when summer signing Johan Manzambi tapped in while Tottenham were temporarily reduced to 10 players. Micky van de Ven had left the pitch to receive treatment for a cut face.

Nicolas Jackson extended the visitors’ advantage in the 67th minute with a composed finish before Emi Buendia struck 11 minutes from time. His 22-yard effort flew into the top corner to put Unai Emery’s side firmly in control.

Tottenham improved late on, with Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke finding the net to reduce the deficit and give Roberto De Zerbi’s struggling team some consolation, but Villa held on.

Everton and Newcastle claim victories

Thierno Barry scored the only goal as unbeaten Everton defeated Ipswich Town 1-0 to move into the top five.

Newcastle United made a fast start against promoted Hull City, scoring twice in the opening seven minutes through Joe Willock and Lewis Hall. Hull, who suffered their first league defeat of the season, responded when Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back midway through the second half.

Newcastle were forced to defend their narrow lead for the remainder of the match but secured the points.

Later on Saturday, Coventry City will travel to Nottingham Forest seeking their first points of the season.
