Barcelona’s flying start puts Mourinho’s Real Madrid scoring record in sight

Barcelona have opened the Spanish league season with six consecutive victories and 28 goals, giving Hansi Flick’s side an early chance of challenging Real Madrid’s record total from Jose Mourinho’s 2011-12 campaign.

The Catalan club are averaging 4.6 goals per match so far, a rate that exceeds the figure set by Mourinho’s Real Madrid over an entire season. That team scored 121 goals in 38 matches, averaging 3.18 per game, as they won the title with a record 100 points.

Cristiano Ronaldo led Real Madrid’s scoring that season with 46 goals. Gonzalo Higuain contributed 22, while Karim Benzema scored 21 as the Madrid side established a goalscoring record in the history of the Spanish league.

Barcelona’s 28 goals have come during an unbeaten opening run featuring emphatic wins over Elche, Athletic Bilbao, Rayo Vallecano, Valencia, Levante and Racing.

They began with a 5-0 victory against Elche before beating Athletic Bilbao 2-0. Barcelona then defeated Rayo Vallecano 5-2, Valencia 5-0, Levante 4-2 and Racing 7-2 to collect the maximum 18 points available.

Raphinha is Barcelona’s leading scorer in the competition with nine goals. He moved to the top of the club’s chart after scoring a hat-trick in the victory over Racing.

Lamine Yamal has scored seven times and is second among Barcelona’s scorers. The forward has found the net in four successive matches, helping maintain the team’s exceptional attacking output.

Barcelona’s next fixture is away to Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, with the match coming before the international break.

The trip will also bring back memories of last season’s meeting between the sides, when Barcelona suffered a 4-1 defeat against Sevilla.

Flick’s team therefore travel to Sevilla seeking to preserve their perfect start while continuing to score at a rate that keeps Mourinho’s Real Madrid record within sight. Their opening six matches have placed the 121-goal benchmark under pressure, although Barcelona must maintain that level across the remainder of the campaign to threaten the mark.
