Lamine Yamal reveals the price of fame as Barcelona star longs for a quieter life

Lamine Yamal says he wishes he could enjoy a more private and peaceful life in Barcelona, away from the attention that prevents him from experiencing some of the city’s simplest everyday moments.

The Barcelona forward acknowledged that many people would like to trade places with him, but said he often feels the opposite. His comments came after a remarkable summer in which he won the World Cup 2026 with Spain, fulfilling one of his ambitions at the age of only 19.

Yamal made the admission during an interview with Jorge Valdano on the programme Universo Valdano, broadcast by Movistar Plus. He said life in Barcelona was not as perfect as many people assumed, pointing to the disadvantages that accompany his profile and the difficulty of going out without being recognised.

He described a situation that regularly occurs when he walks around the city.

“This always happens to me when I walk through Barcelona. I might go out to buy clothes and people say: ‘I wish I were in Lamine’s position and could buy whatever I wanted,’” Yamal said.

The player from Rocafonda said his own perspective was completely different.

“For me, it is exactly the opposite,” he added.

Yamal explained that one of the main reasons he wanted greater privacy was so he could experience Barcelona with less disruption. The constant attention, he said, made it difficult to move around the city and interact with other people normally.

“I wish I were in your position and could have something to eat on this street in peace, or live alongside people without attracting so much attention,” he said.

Yamal has made an impressive start to the season after what he described as one of the best summers of his career, capped by Spain’s World Cup 2026 triumph. However, his interview highlighted the less visible side of his rapid rise and the personal cost of becoming one of Barcelona’s most recognisable players.
