Barcelona’s flying start puts Mourinho’s Real Madrid goal record under serious threat

Barcelona have won all six of their opening La Liga matches and scored 28 goals, giving them a genuine chance of breaking the competition record set by Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid in the 2011-12 season.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Hansi Flick’s side have yet to face a serious challenge in the league. Barcelona have overcome every opponent, both at Spotify Camp Nou and away from home, to maintain a perfect record.

Flick has indicated that he is not particularly interested in records, but Barcelona’s performances have placed Real Madrid’s long-standing mark firmly in danger.

Real Madrid scored 121 goals in 38 matches during the 2011-12 campaign, an unprecedented total in La Liga that represented an average of 3.18 goals per game.

That team also became the first Real Madrid side to reach 100 points in a league season. Cristiano Ronaldo led the scoring with 46 goals, while Gonzalo Higuain contributed 22 and Karim Benzema scored 21.

Mourinho’s team lost only twice in the league: 1-0 away to Levante and 3-1 against Barcelona. They also exited the Champions League in the semi-finals after losing to Bayern Munich on penalties.

Despite setting the scoring record, Real Madrid failed to score in two league matches, against Racing and Valencia. They also drew with Malaga and Villarreal.

Their biggest victory came at Santiago Bernabeu, where they beat Osasuna 7-1.

Fourteen years later, Barcelona have made a powerful start under Flick, who is in his third season in charge of the Catalan club. Their 28 goals in six matches amount to an average of 4.6 per game.

Barcelona began with a 5-0 win over Elche, followed it with a 2-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao and then beat Rayo Vallecano 5-2. They defeated Valencia 5-0, overcame Levante 4-2 and thrashed Racing 7-2.

Raphinha is currently La Liga’s leading scorer with nine goals. He scored a hat-trick against the side from Cantabria, taking his total to four hat-tricks for Barcelona.

His closest challenger within the Barcelona squad is Lamine Yamal, who reached seven league goals after scoring in four consecutive matches. Yamal tried several different ways to find the net before completing the scoring following a Maradona-like move from Adeyemi.

Before the international break, Barcelona travel to face Sevilla at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The fixture proved difficult for Flick’s team last season, when they suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat.

Barcelona’s ambitions extend beyond preserving their perfect start. They also want to maintain an extraordinary scoring rate that has attracted attention across Europe and threatens the record still held by Mourinho’s Real Madrid.
