Javier Aguirre poised to become Valencia head coach, ESPN reports

Javier Aguirre is on the verge of being appointed Valencia head coach, according to ESPN.

The Mexican is expected to replace Carlos Corberan, who was dismissed by the Spanish club last week. Valencia are due to face Real Sociedad on Sunday in the seventh round of La Liga.

Corberan left after taking charge of 72 official matches since his appointment in December 2024. He recorded 28 wins, 18 draws and 26 defeats during his time at the club.

Aguirre is reportedly the leading candidate for the Valencia job, ahead of Ernesto Valverde, who declined the opportunity to take up a coaching position this season.

Valencia are 19th in La Liga with four points from their opening six matches.

The appointment would give Aguirre his seventh coaching experience in the Spanish top flight. His previous spells in the league came with Atletico Madrid, Osasuna, Espanyol, Real Zaragoza, Leganes and Real Mallorca.

Aguirre’s most recent role was as Mexico manager. He guided the national team to the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where they were eliminated by England.

Following the tournament, the Mexican Football Federation announced the appointment of Rafael Marquez as Mexico’s head coach, replacing Aguirre, who had previously managed Egypt.

Valencia’s first match after the international break will be against Racing on 11 October.
