Brentford punish Chelsea defensive errors in emphatic 3-0 Premier League win

Brentford moved up to third in the Premier League after a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea at Gtech Stadium, leaving the visitors seventh with seven points from five matches.

Chelsea had appeared capable of securing a goalless draw, but Brentford took control after half-time and exposed repeated weaknesses in the Blues’ defence under manager Xabi Alonso.

The breakthrough came when Mikkel Damsgaard delivered a precise corner from the left. Schuster met it at the far post and headed the ball across goal, allowing Anthony to finish from close range.

Chelsea responded with a double substitution, introducing Quenda and Acheampong, and produced their strongest spell of pressure through a series of corners. Caoimhin Kelleher dealt confidently with them, while a powerful effort from Quenda was blocked.

Brentford remained dangerous on the counter-attack, however, and doubled their lead after Ayre intercepted a misplaced pass. Schade’s first effort was saved by Martinez, but the rebound fell to Igor Thiago, who made no mistake.

Fabio Carvalho completed the scoring in the fourth minute of added time. With Chelsea committed forward, Brentford broke into the space behind the defence and Carvalho went through on goal before calmly placing the ball into the net.

The result secured Brentford’s three points in a deserved victory and extended Chelsea’s difficult start to the campaign.

Fofana stands out in cautious first half

Chelsea began brightly and nearly took the lead when Neto benefited from an unsuccessful clearance by Lewis-Potter, but Kelleher reacted well to make the save.

Brentford repeatedly attacked down the left through Lewis-Potter, Jan Zamburek and Schade, yet their progress was restricted by Wesley Fofana. The Chelsea defender dominated his individual duels and effectively closed down that side of the pitch.

The opening period also produced an unusual incident when Schade lifted Chelsea defender Barco off the ground before a free-kick, drawing loud jeers from the home crowd.

Kelleher then survived an embarrassing moment. Kayode’s long throw-in travelled towards the goalkeeper, who appeared to lose concentration as the ball rolled beneath his foot and headed for the goal. He recovered just in time to stop it on the line, in a moment reminiscent of Peter Enckelman’s famous error.

There was also an impressive piece of skill from Rogers, whose backheel released Welbeck, although the move was stopped for offside. Rogers later saw a powerful shot deflected behind for a corner, while Ayre appeared to pull Welbeck back in another incident that brought no foul.

The second half began with greater attacking intent from Brentford. Chavarria fired over before Damsgaard’s corner created the opening goal, and the hosts continued to threaten on the break as Chelsea pushed forward.
