Amina Orfi set to become squash’s youngest world number one

Amina Orfi defeated Hania El Hammamy 3-2, winning the deciding game 12-10, to claim the Qatar Classic title and move to the top of the world rankings.

The new rankings will be announced on Monday.

Orfi will become the world’s number one player at the age of 19 years and two months, making her the youngest woman to achieve the feat.

She will break the record set by New Zealand’s Susan Devoy in 1984.

Orfi will be the fifth Egyptian woman to reach the top of the squash rankings, following Raneem El Welily, Nour El Sherbiny, Nouran Gohar and El Hammamy.

Her victory in the Qatar Classic also makes her the 18th woman to become world number one. She joins a list of leading figures in the sport, including Malaysia’s Nicol David and Australia’s Michelle Martin.
